Magic – Jordi Rozenmen (culled from Vita Brevis Press)

There is always magic
In the space between two trees

And then fireflies,
In their symphonic silence, in the soft dark
Slow to realize—dozens of them
In one long, grassy space
And if you just look long enough
A sudden—quiet—multiplying of light
A pulse
Rising out of air
Out of nowhere
Low to the ground
Subtle, your undulating
Heartbeat is in there, five
Times per twinkle, steady
That is magic

And when you find yourself
In that place from your childhood
And the place is so heavy with gold and
Memory that you cannot take one
Step without feeling it
Cannot touch your hand
To the wall without feeling it
It is so full of magic
Because it is so full of you
And what you are really greeting there
Is your sense of yourself at seven
So sure
And full
That it spilled over
And permeated the walls

And there is always magic
In the space between two trees
