April 30 – Nathan Cocker (Poetry 365)

Gail Gadot
I do not need another slice of cake,
my stomach just won't take it,

and don't give me any custard,
it brings me out in spots.

I do not need anything spicy
or bland or hot or frozen.

I will eat anything shoved
under my nose, if its cooked,

So make sure that it's not raw,
or smack down, or pay-per-view.

I do not need poetry,
or any other Wikipedia entries.

I do not need access to my childhood home,
it's not mine anymore,

I won't find mother ignoring me,
or father getting drunk at the club,

there's just nothing there
except unemployment.

I do not like the tastes of childhood,
I do not want a cold, damp attic,

I do not want peeling wallpaper and mould,
I do not get enquiries about my favourite.

I not longer want to recall my midnight lament
dreaming about adventures in asphalt brindle

cowering from the squawks and chirps
from urban wildlife scuffles.

I do not need stillness
I don't want to relax

I don't want to enjoy
I don't want to recline

I do not need compensation
I do not need your advice

I hate the way you peer at me over your glasses
and scribble notes into your notebook,

you'll want me to make butterflies from wet paint
you'll want some kind of update on my condition.

you'll need me to eat another slice of cake
just to watch my stomach not take it.

I am a Social Worker by day and an artist/writer by night. I use the written word in an attempt to make sense of the secret worlds and dysfunctional dynamics that lurk beneath the facades of our daily interactions. I am not sure how my writing styles are characterized, nor am I overly concerned about it. I am immensely enthusiastic about music and often connect better with songs than I do people. I also have an intense appreciation for quality wines and whiskies, frequently consuming them in excess. I like things that smell good and struggle to manage the symptoms of a life-long relationship with depression. So, why "grumpygorman"? Spend some time here and find out...
